Your Recycling Questions Answered

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

By MIKE SELVON

In the world today there is a big problem. Pollution and the overcrowding dilemma of landfills are quickly making its way into every household. Recycling has become a very valuable way to help combat the landfill issue.

It is remarkably simple to do and should be done by every household in the United States and across the world. The United States has seen an increase in the amount of people recycling. It is estimated that thirty five percent of all garbage will be recycled.

Hopefully in the coming years we can raise that percentage and start using our garbage in more productive manners. If you are not familiar with recycling, this article is for you.

What is waste management?

Waste management is the process of the city picking up your garbage each week and distributing it to the proper center that it is supposed to be sent too. They are responsible for making sure your recycling bins arrive at the appropriate center to be recycled. Waste management services play an important part in our daily lives. Without their valuable services we would definitely find ourselves in a world of hurt and smell.

What are the three “R’’s?”

The three “R’’s” would be: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Reduce is using less non-biodegradable substances that cannot be recycled. The second is to reuse items such as plastic containers or appliances that can be repaired. The third is to recycle products so that they can be given life again as something new.

The way to tie all three together is to buy recycled materials. This creates an incentive for more people to recycle products because they know that they will be used in a new way later down the road.

What about food and yard trimmings?

Yard trimmings are a great way to help recycle and create fertilizer. Food waste products are disposable too but they will smell so bad when decomposing that you will definitely have a problem with animals and neighbors. When it comes to creating your own compost pile you want to stick with organic materials such as leaves, plants, grass and other yard wastes and leave food or animal wastes alone to be disposed of in another manner.

What is the EPA?

The Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, is a branch of the United States government that is designed to help protect our nature’’s resources and our environment. They are the leaders in keeping our air, water and soil safe from contaminates and ensuring that people are following the law when it comes to preserving the environment. It is through their efforts that more businesses and industries are using recycling programs to help eliminate waste products.

What do I do if my town does not have a recycling program?

If your town does not have a recycling program do not despair. It may mean a little more work on your part but it is still possible to recycle. You just may have to drive into the next town to find a recycling center.

The best tip is to not make a weekly trip that way you save gas and still help the environment. Just make sure and wash out your recyclable materials, store them properly in the appropriate containers and call ahead to find out what types of materials they accept.

Waste Collection Is Everyone\’s Responsibility

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

By MIKE SELVON

Waste collection may not be something that you spend a great deal of time considering but you actually should because your trash directly impacts other people. Hopefully, you take your regular garbage out each week and also set your recyclables out for pick up, but do you think about what will happen if a large part of the population doesn”t bother to do the same? Landfills are becoming a very real problem and one that should be in the forefront of many individual’’s minds.

Your garbage cycle all begins with a recycling program designed to cut down on the waste that is put into a landfill. The program utilizes certain material byproducts from the merchandise and food that you purchase.

Take for example a bottle of water. If you buy one per day for a year, that adds up to a staggering three hundred and sixty four bottles. If they aren”t disposed of properly, then they may end up in a ditch somewhere. So you can see how solid waste management might have a difficult time keeping up with all those plastic bottles.

Your waste collection efforts begin at home where you sort out your garbage. Recyclables and regular trash must go into separate containers. The sanitation crew will pick up the waste materials that are destined to be recycled. Once back at the “shop,” the items will be sorted out again and then sent on to a plant that can turn those plastic bottles and waste paper into something new and improved.

That something else may be a new road paved with asphalt and glass from bottles. It may be a park bench or a new notebook made from recycled newspapers. Each item that is reused and remade into something new equals less trash cluttering up and overfilling landfills. That can quickly add up and help save the environment.

Hopefully, you will give your waste collection a little more thought. It is perfectly natural to sometimes want to ignore the messier things in life but we can no longer stick our heads into the sand playing ostrich with the Earth’’s future.

Over flowing garbage heaps may not impact your life but they certainly will have an impact on future generations. By doing our part to help reduce the amount of trash that we generate and by recycling certain items, we can help to make sure that the future remains bright.

How You Can Help the Environment by Recycling

Sunday, May 25th, 2008

By Eddie Hudd

Global warming is a very real threat to the preservation of our planet and recycling is one of many ways that people can cut down the amount of carbon dioxide that is released into our atmosphere.

Not only is recycling environmentally friendly, it is also cost effective since it reduces the amount of waste for disposal, saves space in landfills, is more energy-efficient than burning materials, and conserves natural resources. Reducing or nearly eliminating the need for these processes, therefore, achieves huge savings in energy. Did you know for example that recycling aluminium cans saves around ninety percent of the energy required to make the same amount of aluminium from new.

Recycling is more important than ever because just throwing away rubbish into a landfill or digging a hole and burying it is not a solution to the global waste problem. Our landfills are overflowing with hazardous waste and other products that are not biodegradable. Most organic waste items such as food will break down and decompose in a matter of weeks, leaving no trace. However, plastic bottles, disposable diapers and Styrofoam containers, to name a few, are all becoming huge problems in most areas of the world.

Recycling can mean the difference between a clean planet and one overrun by garbage. You may not believe it but we can all begin to make a difference towards preserving this Earth from landfills that are quickly becoming full to overflowing. The quality of future lives starts now, with your decision to recycle your own garbage.

Recycling is easy once you get everything sorted. You will need to sort out the recyclables such as glass bottles, plastics cartons and paper into the appropriate bins and from there, those materials are sent on their way to becoming something else for use. You can also utilize those food scraps and waste trimmings from the yard in a compost heap.

If every person did their part to help combat overflowing landfills, then we could reduce our waste by fifty percent which is half the amount going into landfills today. Perhaps there will come a time when we no longer have to continuously find new places to bury our waste. Plastics would be reused and organic materials would be turned back into the soil to enrich the ground for crops. It is a nice thought but the reality is that not enough people are doing their part to help make this a cleaner world.

Recycling is your responsibility and only you can do your part to help reduce the amount of garbage going into our landfills. Each time you throw away a recyclable you are adding to a growing problem. Deciding to recycle is an easy step and one that is remarkably simple to initiate. If you do not know where to start, there are plenty of resources, such as your local environmental department, to help you learn how to recycle your leftover waste

Do yourself and the earth a favour by doing your part. Your grand children and great grand children will thank you for it.

Questions To Ask When Hiring a Junk Removal Company

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

By Amy Nutt

How many people do you know that have junk and boxes piled up in their garage, back yard or somewhere on a piece of property away from their home? You would be rather surprised how many do. You would also be surprised how many people have tons of useless junk within their homes that is crammed into closets and various other storage areas. Junk removal not only makes property look better, but it also makes it healthier. Any time there is junk in an area, strange insects and rodents are drawn to it. This can result in neighboring homes or even your home having an infestation issue, so it is important to employ a junk removal company to get rid of it as soon as possible.

Hiring a junk removal company is a very important decision. Instead of getting rid of the junk yourself, you are taking on the services of someone who can dispose of it properly. However, it is in your best interest to ensure that the company you plan to employ is one that is certainly going to take the right avenues to dispose of the junk and that they are going to do it in a timely manner and in a way that will not damage any of the surrounding property. You also want to have it done at an affordable rate and still receive quality service.

Instances when a junk removal company is necessary

Ever seen someone tackling those home improvement endeavors and there is old appliances and furniture sitting out in the front yard? Well, that is where a garbage can is not going to cut it and something bigger is. Many garbage companies refuse to take large loads. If you have ever put out a large amount of garbage for the garbage man to pick up on garbage day to find that he only took half of it, then your load was too large. But if you call a junk removal company, they will be happy take away anything you need to get rid of at a reasonable price.

If you have old appliances, old concrete, furniture that you want to get rid of, or old junk that is accumulating and taking up space, a junk removal company will take it to the dump for you. They will even get rid of that old junk pile in the back yard that is an eyesore. Once the grass grows back, you”ll be able to enjoy the beauty of your yard again. However, to find a good service there are questions that you need to ask.

Questions to ask a junk removal company

You want to make sure you ask questions to cover all of your bases. You want to ask such questions as:

1. “What do you hail away?” Ask this because a good company will haul anything you need to get rid of.

2. “How much do you charge to haul it?” A good junk removal company will provide you with a price that you may find quite reasonable.

3. “How do you dispose of the junk?” You want to make sure they are disposing of it at a dump and not an illegal dump at the side of a road somewhere.

4. “Are you licensed?” Some states require licensing for junk removal, so make sure they have a license.

5. “How much experience do you have?” You want to ensure that they have the adequate experience.

By asking these questions, you can make sure that your junk goes where it belongs and that it gets there by an experienced crew that can do it for you at a reasonable rate. There is no need to stare at junk all day when there is a way to get rid of it.

Enviromental Protection Starts With You

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

By MIKE SELVON

If it were a race to produce the most waste, then the United States would be leading the pack. Over 18.5 million tons are produced each year and a majority of this could be avoided by citizens joining in a recycling program.

Yes, Americans have made great strides towards environmental protection, as 35 percent of people recycle their garbage each year and help landfills avoid the constantly overflowing recyclables that clog up the landfill. But it is not enough. Further steps need to be taken to ensure that people know how to protect their environment.

It is amazing how simple recycling can be once you know what to do. Your first step is separating your garbage waste from the recyclables. Environmental protection begins at home with you dropping the appropriate trash into its special waste bin.

It is that easy. Sometimes there is money involved, as is the case with recycling aluminum cans. You take in a bag filled with cans and you get money back. How great is that?

Many schools and work places are not part of a recycling program. However, if recycling bins were supplied and appropriately labeled for glass, aluminum cans, plastic and paper, then no doubt people would join in the recycling movement and place their garbage in the appropriate containers.

Have your employer send out a memo asking them to do so. Lead by example and always do your part. If others see your commitment, then they will likely follow suit.

Make sure you buy recycled goods. This helps recycling industries know that there are people out there who are concerned with the environment. Many of our day-to-day products can be purchased that contain recycled materials.

You can buy notebook paper made from recycled paper goods. Many detergent and household cleaning products come in bottles made from recycled plastics. By taking this small step into consumerism you can help further the cause and still have the items you need for your home.

There may not be a way to change the fact that the United States produces the most garbage of any country in the world. But considering that only thirty-five percent of the garbage is being recycled leaves a lot of room for improvement. Those numbers take time to change.

Those numbers can and will go up eventually if environmental protection becomes something that everyone is aware of and doing their part to rectify. It may start with one home but it has to spread in order for it to be effective in keeping recyclables out of our landfills.

Return Of The Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

By Janet Winter

Here in the South-Eastern U.S., we just spotted our first Ruby Throated Hummingbird of the season!

If you”ve not done so already, it’’s time to clean out and refill your hummingbird feeders, because the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird “the king of nature’’s frequent flyers” is on its way back to the eastern U.S.

In the United States, you can find over 16 kinds of hummingbirds. For people east of the Rockies, the most prevalent by far is the Ruby-Throated. In fact, the Ruby-Throated is the most widely distributed of the world’’s 338 species of hummingbirds, all of which occur ONLY in the Western Hemisphere.

The Ruby-Throated Hummingbird is often found between woodland and meadow. However, it has adapted well to human development, but only if there is shelter, space and food. Thus, it is frequently seen in suburban backyards with mature trees and shrubs, in wooded parks and around farmsteads.

The keys to attracting hummingbirds are to provide food, nesting materials and water misters for them to fly through.

Hummingbirds are extremely loyal to feeding sites. A hummingbird that feeds in your yard one year will return to that feeder the next. If you aren”t attracting as many hummers as you want - read on!

As the male Ruby-Throated is so territorial, one key is to offer lots of feeders. For both the male and female, there are two ”Golden Rules” for your hummingbird feeders. Keep the feeder clean and the nectar fresh. Hummingbirds keep their distance from fermented nectar.

Perhaps hummers understand that they need a clear head for their acrobatic flying. Fermented nectar, which can occur in a few days in hot summer months, can support the growth of deadly molds. If a hummingbird gets a taste of fermented nectar from your feeder, it will look elsewhere for a drink and remain suspicious of the offending feeder for a long time.

Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds spend the winter in Mexico and Central America, and begin leaving in January. The males leave first, followed about ten days later by the females, but their exit from Central America is spread over a three months period, and they do not migrate in flocks. These factors eliminate the possibility of losing the species to storms.

Some will take the long route over land, hugging the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Others will take the over-water route, landing in North America from Texas to the Florida panhandle. The 500-odd mile flight takes about 20 hours, and the birds may loose half of their pre-migration weight. To make the trip, they must eat enough so they weigh 1-1/2 times their usual weight.

Once in North America, the birds move steadily northwards, covering about twenty miles per day. Banding studies have indicated that the birds tend to return to where they hatched.

A few fun facts:

1. Hummingbirds can fly at speeds of 60 miles per hour and can fly forwards, backwards, up, down, sideways and even upside down briefly, but they can”t walk.
2. They consume half their body weight (1/8 lb) in food every day. That would be like an average kid eating about 40 to 50 pounds of food a day!
3. Their hearts beat about 1,260 times per minute, and they take about 250 breaths per minute.
4. They have 1,500 feathers.
5. A hummingbird nest is not much bigger than a quarter and often contains just 2-3 eggs no bigger than small peas.

So the “Platinum Medallion” of frequent flyers is now on its way back. But why go to all the trouble? Why do they migrate?

You have to think back to the last ice age for the answer. As the ice covering most of North America retreated, some tropical birds discovered there was less competition for food and shelter if they moved northward, following the retreating ice. Some song birds could survive the colder climate, eating berries and seeds when insects were no longer available. They”re the birds we enjoy year round. The Ruby-Throats, however, are carnivorous and must rely on nectar of flowering plants and insects.

Now is the time to put out your hummingbird feeders, and welcome your Ruby-Throats back! Help them enjoy their summer at your house, then prepare them with plenty of fresh food for their long journey south.

Chinese Antiques; Wise, Glorious - China Now; 1936 Berlin Olympics?

Friday, May 16th, 2008

By Derek Dashwood

Chinese antiques have delicacy and intricacy that can amaze and delight. To view such pieces is to deeply appreciate that such an ancient civilization was creating such intricacy when most of the world, including Europeans lived in caves and trees is to appreciate the rich depth of the Inner Kingdom. And yet as the present leaders remind us, this great civilization did not involve democracy, and they see no need to have it intrude into their eastern ways, which have worked so well for so long.

Obviously many found offensive and how state organized it seemed, to then hear and see mobs of Chinese protest and boycott a French store in China. This manipulated fear mongering against a French company was because honest young people in Paris did dare protest the brutal mis treatment of the peoples of Tibet. And to me it seems the world rushed this honor of Greek democracy and fair play brotherhood to the wrong nation, too soon this time.

The glorious civilization of Germany was received with less ill will in 1936 than this 2008 torch under heavy police protection to make it safely up to the top of Mount Everest or what they now call it, and downhill perhaps on that new train right through to the smoke filled air of Beijing. Which, just to make a point, many world leaders are taking a pass on the glorious opening ceremonies. We all should too. And if it says China on the label, do we really need it this year?

What would be very wise, we advise, is to search out web net sales of original Chinese antiques, made back when they did not smog up the earth, but made it to last. And every time one of those breaks, there is one less precious actifact left for you. Clear your mantle, Mickey. Enough with the long car drive and the huge buggy at disco city. Instead, it is easier, and far wiser, for you to prowl the net for Chinese antiques, in a set. Until your mantle sings with bargain bid Mings. And one day, years away, hear how your phone rings.

Within the decade, a now much more rich Susie Wong will want to buy back her great grand mother’’s Chinese antiques. Which sit on your mantle. And while neighbor Ned hauls his set of lead modern China to the yard sale, where he finds no one wants because everyone else had many huge buggy trips to disco city. Not you.
And those Olympics will seem more like Roman Circus than Athens, they could show fights between Lions and Buddhist Monks. Modern China, you befoul the Torch.

A Career in Botany as a Botanist

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

By derek smiley

One of the acclaimed favorite things to do when studying plant science as a botanist is the various amounts of specialties as well as career openings from which you can choose from. This wide diversity makes it easy for people with different lifestyles as well as interests to make and develop career in plant science. Botany opens a selection of career opportunities for both male and female. The botany field provides a more fulfilling job satisfaction in both it been fun and a benefit to others.

The most important feature that has been intriguing people for a lot of years is plant life. As they put forward a visual beauty and also resources for basic human requirements. While air along with water pollution increases the biological variety is been reduced.

In the midst of careers available in this field of study is ecologist, taxonomist, conservationist, garden centre consultant, forester as well as a plant explorer and botanist. You may even end up overseas and exotic lands, this will give you the opportunity to live and work in different countries. If you are one with a mathematical background the areas that would interest you would be biophysics, development botany, genetics, modeling or systems ecology.

The various fields that the more chemistry minded would be interested in would be plant physiologist, plant biochemist, molecular biologist or a more complex field been chemotaxonomist. The thing that places plants and animals together is the basic biological process of both these life forms. Plants however, are easy to cultivate and manipulate.

Should microscopy and beauty in the most natural form appeal to you, then the study of plants would be right up your alley. Microscopic organism studies more than not goes for microbiology, phycology or mycology.

Botany is the scientific study of plants. To this day it is a scientist believes that bacteria and fungi are in their own dissimilar territories. As this is a broad field of study, there are many plant biologists and many other opportunities available.

The outcome of botanical research is to improve and increase the production of medicines, foodstuff, fiber, building materials as well as other plant products. Botanical knowledge is used to help keep up the play areas for kids, forests, open lands and wilderness areas. Plant science is used to assist in the pollution areas as well. If you can imagine yourself to be able to look into the cells of a plant, which is magnified to the size of a building, to see things the way that no one has ever before, botany is what you are carved out to do. The question you should ask yourself is do I want to follow a career in botany.

As is the same with any career, success is dependent of what you put into the job, and productivity is followed by hard work and hard work becomes fun when you love what you do and at the same time driven by it. A career in botany is very rewarding. Get admitted to an active program and things can only grow from there. The botanist salary varies depending on what field you choose.

Holiday Island Tenerife Acts On Environment

Saturday, May 10th, 2008

By Roger Munns

Tenerife is one of the seven Canary Islands off the coast of Africa and a favourite destination in the winter for European holidays, and the island is now looking at how it can improve it’’s environmental record, in both the public and private sectors.

Tenerife and Tourism

The island of Tenerife is almost completely dependent on tourism, and is a particular favourite for British tourists.

Known among many in the UK as ”Paradise Island” Tenerife is sunny year-round, which makes it the perfect destination for relaxing in the sun any time of the year. And they want to keep the tourists coming back.

Going green and protecting the environment is one way that Tenerife can protect its status as a hot holiday spot that won”t have her reputation damaged as being environmentally unfriendly.

The island is vulnerable because it is so dependent on tourism. Changing climates could easily put them out of business and entirely change the nature of the island. Rising temperature alone could make relaxing on the beach an unbearable past-time, so acting to stop global warming makes a lot of the sense for Tenerife.

Travelling to and around Tenerife

Travel is a major cause of environmental concerns and a ferry is available to take holidaymakers to the island of Tenerife from the Spanish mainland. The ferry goes to either Santa Cruz de Tenerife or Los Cristanos. Nearly half a million visitors come to the island of Tenerife via cruise ships.

The main method of transportation on the island of Tenerife is buses. An elaborate fleet of newer buses which have less of a carbon footprint provide transportation for one location to another on the island. There are also plans for a light rail network to connect the capital with the south side of the island. The idea is to reduce the amount of carbon emissions in the air caused by ground travel.

Tenerife Goes Green

Tenerife is doing a lot to protect its beautiful and natural environment. The island has made a commitment to individuals and companies to go beyond the basics and protect the environment of the island with aggressive tactics.

Some of the things they are currently doing include:

* To use water purification and its natural reserves from underground.
* To promote recycling as a means to cut back on using natural resources.
* To use desalination for non drinking water.
* Cutting back on carbon emissions.
* An elaborate bus network to minimize traffic on the island.
* To protect the habitat of tropical pilot whales, which is a huge attraction for holiday-makers.
* Zoning half of the islandas either a national park or nature reserves.
* Promoting more renewable energy.

In addition to protecting the island’’s natural surroundings, Tenerife is dedicated to preserving its heritage and culture.

Tenerife as a Role Model for Protecting the Environment

While we all have seen some of the effects of global warming, Tenerife has taken action to protect the environment and retain the beauty and reputation of the island. The steps they”ve taken to reduce emissions and balance carbon in the air are ongoing and under regular review.

Truth Behind Dinosaur Fossils

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

By Christa Kowalczyk

Paleontology is the branch of biology that studies the forms of life that existed in the past geologic periods and eras, mainly by studying and scrutinizing of its remains, the fossils. Basically, fossils are those what is left and remnants of a dead animal or a plant that can be seen these days that has been ingenuously planted on rocks and other form of hard earthly surfaces.

Although, of course, it doesn”t mean that the said “remains” are the real skeletons or the actual plant rather fossils can be a petrified product of the original and also be the imprints like footprints. Fossils are believed and considered to have been submerged on water before, for the reason of the belief of that the remains of animal or plant was first covered by a soft soil and after some times layers of it gathered on it, hardened, solidify and then were pressed on together by natural processes. The water that is made up of minerals goes through the layers and changed the plant or animal relics into a rock like appearance and features.

The most intriguing kinds are the dinosaur fossils. The name dinosaur is a derived word from Latin terms: deinos, which means, “Great;” sauros for “lizard;” and fossils meaning “dug up.” Literally, it means “great lizard that was dug up.” The occurrence of these things is not new to us anymore.

In fact, people have been finding dinosaur fossils for almost thousands of years. The very fist recorded finding of the existence of dinosaurs is most of it in England, through a British fossil finder named as William Buckland. It was in the year 1819 when he exposed his findings of Megalosaurus Bucklandii (Buckland’’s Giant Lizard) from England.

In the year1824, his discovery was named after him. However, earlier than this, Reverend Plot had discovered a very large femur bone during the year 1676 also in England. After careful studies, authorities imply that it may in fact have belonged to a dinosaur. Nevertheless, because there were past discoveries of enormous human skeletal remains that may range from 8 feet to 12 feet-tall many assumed that the discovery might have belonged to a very tall, almost a giant like human. However, during the year 1838, the entire dinosaur fossil was seen at New Jersey, USA by William Parker Foulke.

Out of curiosity, many people would hollow out information about the presence and occurrence of dinosaurs way back early times and this helped them become aware of their existence so the next fossil discovery was given enough attention. Also, dinosaur fossils were believed to be millions of years old, which were based on its geologic column, which dates fossils based on the rock’’s type, appearance, and formation where they are found.

These fossils are located all through the earth’’s sedimentary layers. Almost 95.0% of all earth’’s fossil recorded comes from the remains of marine invertebrates, 4.74% are from plants and estimate of 0.25% are land invertebrates and 0.0125% are a vertebrate. Among those vertebrates, the majority comes from fishes. Furthermore, those 95% vertebrates are found to have only one bone or less.

Through these dinosaur fossils, people of modern days are able to recognize that there are animals living here on earth even before the existence of the first man. This, in one way or another made us realize the importance of animals consequently believing that modern animals should be preserved as much as possible. These “leftovers” also give us a picture of what the earth looks like before now.
